Astrostatistics is a relatively young field which concerns itself with the development and deployment of new statistical methods applied to astrophysical, cosmological and astroparticle physics problems. Driven by the exponential increase in the size and complexity of astrophysical data sets in the last decade, astrostatistics is rapidly becoming a discipline at the forefront of research in cosmology and astrophysics.
In order to fully reap the benefits of ongoing and future expensive observational campaigns, it is of outmost importance to develop powerful, fast and accurate statistical methods. Imperial astrophysicists have been crucial developers of the new field of statistical cosmology which will enable scientists to understand the properties of the ubiquitous dark matter, the mysterious dark energy, and the parameters in general which govern the history and future of our Universe.
